Goodbye, Texas - Hello, Kentucky

So, leaving Texas was a bittersweet moment. I was excited because I would be returning to Kentucky for the rest of the summer and I would get to spend some time with my family and friends in my hometown. It was sad, however, because it was just Bella and I travelling alone together. We had to leave Brad behind because he had to continue working in Amarillo.
Bella and I flew, just the two of us, back from Amarillo to Kentucky, with one layover in Dallas. I was super nervous beforehand because I had never flown before. It was on my bucket list and I was excited to check that goal off my list, but at the same time, I had a lot of anxiety about going through security and dealing with all of the craziness of the airport. It made it even worse that I was flying alone with my two year old and had absolutely no idea what I was doing.
Our flight ended up getting cancelled twice due to weather in Dallas but we eventually made it on the plane. Travelling (at least on this day) and maneuvering through the airports was not an issue at all. It was pretty simple and easy to figure out. The first plane ride made my head and tummy feel a little weird, but I chocked that up to my body freaking out a bit because it had never been so high up before. Once we boarded the second flight after our layover, the ride was smooth sailing. :)
Although I am super sad that I had to leave my husband behind in Texas, I'm excited to get to spend some time in my hometown and have some fun with my friends and family before we move, permanently, to Ohio in late summer/early fall.
So goodbye, Texas. Hello, Kentucky.

Review:
Oh, Cambria. She does it to me every time. I don't think I have ever read a book written by her that I didn't enjoy. And this one definitely doesn't disappoint.

I won't lie, I was a little worried when I found out that #Rev was going to be the last GearShark book to focus soley on Trent and Drew. I loved my boys and I didn't want to let them go.  I was even more worried when I found out that the third book in the series was going to be about Lorhaven, my least favorite character from the series so far. It's obvious to me now that I completely pictured Lorhaven wrong. I imagined his character to look almost the exact opposite of what he actually looks like and I have no idea why I got that impression. So I was nervous when I found out that the next book was going to be entirely about him.

And then I saw the cover. And oh em gee, I think I fell for Lorhaven right then and there.  I hadn't even read the book yet but I knew that this cover was perfect. I knew it fit perfectly with the characters and with the story and, even though I love my Trent and Drew, this is my favorite cover in the entire series so far. It's absolutely beautiful.

#Swag took me some time to read. Not because it wasn't good but simply because I started reading it around the time that I would be travelling alone with my two year old from Texas to Kentucky. So we had a lot of packing and stress and three cancelled flights and a whole lot of craziness. But I finally got to finish it and it was absolutely amazing.

I'm so happy that Cambria gave Joey and Lorhaven their own book and that she let them come together the way that she did.  I think that these two characters had so much to offer each other and were able to help each other in so many ways.

It was interesting to learn more about Lorhaven and what his life was like outside of his rivalry with Trent and Drew.  We went from thinking about Lorhaven as a douche bag, to seeing him as an actual human being with real emotions and legitimate issues.

I'm also glad that we got to learn more about Joey. I was curious about her from the very beginning and she brought a lot to the story. Reading everything that she had to go through is, sadly, very realistic in today's world and I can only imagine what a woman would have to go through in a man's sport, like Joey did. But she was a strong character with a lot of determination and a knack for self preservation.  She was a dainty little princess (not that there's anything wrong with that) and she knew how to take care of herself. Joey is a very admirable character.

I loved, even more than anything, the further glimpse into the life of Arrow. Other than Trent and Drew, Arrow has been the character to catch my attention and hold my curiosity the most in the GearShark series. It's hinted in the second book that Arrow has had to deal with some shit and it's sad to learn what this kid has had to go through (don't tell him I called him a kid!) and the things he's had to deal with. It makes me so sad that he, just like Joey, is a fictional character representing a very real problem in our world today. I can't wait to read #Blur. I know I'm going to fall in love with Arrow and, to be perfectly honest, I have a little crush on him. ;) I'm excited to see where his story takes him.

Overall, this book was absolutely amazing.  A beautiful, heartbreakingly real story with amazing characters that deal with real issues.

Exploring Texas: Lake Meredith

One thing that we searched for during our time in Texas was a lake or a nice body of water to go exploring around and play in. A friend of my husbands told him about Lake Meredith so we decided to go check it out one day.  We had planned to have a picnic and grill some food and check the area out so we did a little grocery shopping for some stuff that we needed. Unfortunately, when we started towards Lake Meredith, we got caught in a pretty bad storm. Hail, rain, the whole shebang. The weather was terrible and we didn't want to drive it and we were hungry, so the closest place to us at that moment was a delicious little burger place called Freddy's. If you've ever been to a Steak & Shake, Freddy's is similar but they have frozen custard and, to be perfectly honest, I think the food is better.
We had some good food and discovered a delicious new place (that we continued to go to several times afterwards) so we couldn't complain too much about the weather pooping out on us. The next day the weather happened to be absolutely beautiful, so we simply rescheduled our adventure and headed out the next day. :)
We had a pretty amazing time in Lake Meredith and Bella got a chance to play with some super nice dogs and get in the water. Waiting until the weather was nice was super worth it and I would love to go back there some time.  Amazing day!

Review & Giveaway: Come What May by A.M. Arthur

Come What May (All Saints, #1)

Title: Come What May
Author: A.M. Arthur
Series: All Saints #1
Version Reviewed: ARC, eBook
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:
Jonas needs Tate. He just doesn't know it yet.
Or at least, he doesn't want to admit it. Because there is no way Jonas Ashcroft is gay. He's a straight, carefree frat boy player, just like any good son of a conservative state senator. If only his struggle to convince everyone—especially himself—didn't leave him so miserable. No matter how many girls or bottles he drowns himself in, Jonas can neither escape nor accept who he is.
Enter Tate. He's smart, confident, and instantly sees right through Jonas's surly exterior. Sure, he's done things in life he's not proud of, but he knows who he is and what he wants. And what he wants is Jonas. As their easy friendship intensifies into something more, Tate introduces Jonas to a life he's never known. One filled with acceptance and sex and a love that terrifies and excites them both.
But some inner demons refuse to be shaken off so easily. When Jonas's old life barges in, he faces a shattering choice, one that could destroy everything he and Tate have fought so hard for. Sometimes love just isn't enough—and sometimes it's exactly what you need.

Review:
I haven't been accepting review requests or taking on review copies for tours and stuff unless they're written by authors that I know and love, simply because I already have a huge TBR pile of review books and ARCs that I need to get through. Seriously, it's bad. But when I saw the cover of this book come through my email from Kismet and read the synopsis, I knew I had to give it a try. I love LGBTQIA books but I don't read many. It's just my opinion, but quite often the ones that do come through are poorly written and the characters jump straight to bed, do the dirty, maybe one conflict and they're done. I'm not really a fan of that. When I read books with couples of the same sex (or any type of characters, really) I want the delicious bedrooms scenes to be heightened by the build up. I want to feel something other than just turned on.

I'm happy to say that Come What May did not disappoint. I admit that I did think the story, relation-ship wise, went a little fast. At times it felt like Jonas moved a little too quickly into the lifestyle he'd apparently always fought against. At the beginning of the story, we really got no hint that Jonas was gay and I assumed that he was unaware of it at well. The way he internalized with himself as well as the way he interacted with Tate. Very quickly however, he was admitting to Tate that he had always known, to some degree, that he was gay and that he had pretty much spent his life repressing it. I do feel like that was a little odd at times. He kind of went from end of the spectrum to the other in a super short amount of time.

I also love that this story dealt with some serious issues. I know quite a few people that either question their sexuality or identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, etc. and I fucking HATE that a teenager, child, or even adult has to fear being thrown away by the people that should love them and support them the most because of who they are. I hate it so much. That is a kind of pain and suffering that someone is not able to understand fully unless they experience for themselves. Some of us end up never letting the people closest to us know who we fully are because we're afraid. And that sucks. No one should have to feel this way.  I love that the Jonas and Tates story tackled that fully, from the shelter that Tate runs for homeless teens to the battle Jonas has to fight with his own father and mother. It was real and definitely important to the story.

Overall, I think this was a beautiful love story. The character were absolutely amazing and I fell in love with them. I'm curious as to what the author has in store for them in the rest of the All Saints series.

Excerpt
[Tate] bypassed the washer and dryer and sorting table, then knocked of Jonas’s door. Gave it to the count of five before turning the knob. Jonas was stretched out on a messy sofa bed, earbuds in and eyes shut. The same thing he did most nights, only this time he was hiding in his room instead of lingering on the back porch.
Tate closed the door, then leaned against it. Crossed his arms. Being alone in a room with the object of his interest maybe wasn’t the best plan, but it wasn’t as if Tate was going to pounce on the guy. He’d probably get punched in the face. Jonas wasn’t ripped but he wasn’t a slouch, either.
Not that Tate couldn’t defend himself. He’d learned how fast when he’d made the choice to hustle so his sisters and Mom could eat.
He gave Jonas a few minutes to notice him, until boredom set in. Done with the subtle approach, Tate marched over and bounced down onto the foot of the bed.
Jonas yelped as he jack-knifed into a sitting position, eyes flying open. His surprise shifted into a dark glare. “Jesus Christ, Tate, really?”
“Why are you avoiding me?”
“I didn’t feel like sitting outside. Doesn’t mean I’m avoiding you.”
“Nice deflection. We’re adults, Jonas. We can talk about what happened in the apartment.”
“Nothing happened in the apartment.”
“No?”
“No.”
Jonas’s glare was on full-force, but behind it was the hunger that Tate had glimpsed upstairs. It gave Tate hope that he hadn’t read Jonas wrong.
“Doris and Raymond know I’m gay,” Tate said.
“And?”
“And it wouldn’t be a big deal to them that you are too, and don’t tell me you’re not.”
Jonas crossed his arms. “What’s the point? You don’t listen to me anyway.”
“Talk to me,” Tate said. “People say I’m a good listener. Especially Addyson. When she gets going, I can’t get a word in edge-wise.”
Jonas’s lips twitched, then flattened. “I can’t be gay.”
“Why not? Dude, it’s not exactly a choice. It’s who you are.”
“Maybe, maybe not. But even if I was, it doesn’t mean I have to act on the impulse. Plenty of gay men stay in the closet, marry women, and have families.”
And are completely miserable their entire lives.
“Plenty of gay men leave the closet, marry men, and have families. Marriage is for all of us now, or didn’t you get the memo?”
Jonas drew his knees to his chest, as if needing his legs to shield himself.
Tate shifted a little closer. “Are you scared of what your parents will think?”
Bingo. Jonas dropped his forehead onto his knees, but not before Tate caught the flash of pain in his eyes.
“They won’t accept it, will they?” Tate asked.

Jonas shook his head. Tate’s heart broke for him.

EXCERPT:
I walk quietly over to the door and press my ear against it to listen. I can hear the clicking of a computer keyboard, then the rolling wheels of a chair. Finally soft footsteps as he pads towards the doors. I back away, afraid of being caught. But he doesn’t slide them open. Instead, the lights flick off and then his footsteps retreat. I hear the crack of a beer bottle being opened, and then a sigh.
I slide the doors apart, just enough to peek inside.
There’s a large monitor on the desk sitting on front of a wall of windows. And on the screen are the images he took of me this morning. Of JD and me. And of the three of us out on the terrace. They flip by, hundreds of them, at least. Maybe thousands. I look over at the couch where he’s sitting with a beer propped up on his leg, staring at me.
“You can look at them if you come in here to do it.”
I don’t know how he wants me to respond, so I’m unsure if I want to look at them or run back to JD’s room and hide.
“I’m sorry about that,” Ark says, clearing his throat. “It’s just… JD stopped thinking about her, ya know? It took him so fucking long to stop thinking about her. And now here you are with a clue. And…”
I step into the room.
“And he’s gonna go looking for shit again, I just know it.”
I take another step towards him and Ark pats the space on the couch next to him. “I love these pictures. Come look at them with me.”
I take two more steps, and then I’m within arm’s reach and he slips his hand in mine.
My body shivers from his touch, but I let him pull me the rest of the way, and take a seat as he lets go. My butt is barely perched on the cushion, my hands in my lap, my body on high alert in case he wants to hurt me.
But he doesn’t. He surprises me by scooting away, propping his back against the armrest, and stretching out his legs behind me. They are long and in the way, so now I can’t lean back.
He takes a swig from his beer. “I saw you this morning. God, has it only been one day?” I know what he means. It feels like I’ve been in their house forever. “And answers were the last thing on my mind, Blue. I mean, fuck. I’d given up, just like JD. I gave up a while back, actually. Just accepted that this was the way things were. The way my life was gonna go. But fuck.”
I don’t know what any of that means, but I take that it’s not good by the way he finishes the beer and then throws it across the room, where it lands cleanly in an open-top trash can near the desk. “Get me another one, will you?”
I look down at him and squint.
He stares back. His eyes are bleary, and red, and now that I look closely, tired. Not tired like he needs sleep. But tired in a way I can relate to. The kind of tired where your body feels heavy and your mind feels empty. “Never mind,” he says in a soft voice that I’ve never heard before. He says it, but he doesn’t stop staring.
“What?” I ask, getting uncomfortable.
“Why’d you come in here?”
“I was…” I was looking for my money so I could leave. But this guy. These guys… they are pulling me towards them somehow. JD and his charm. Ark and his distance. And despite the fact that they take advantage of girls for a living, they feel very… vulnerable. It feels precarious. Like the whole thing might come crashing down at any moment. Like they are held together by some invisible thread. And not some mental connection or shared experience, either. Although I have no doubt they have all that too.
Held together by a thread that’s invisible because it’s nearly gone.
We are alike, then. Aren’t we?
Three people brought together by the early-morning rain.
Two of us clinging together, trying to stick it out. Ride the wave until it crashes, and then help each other up to start all over again.
One of us already dead. Still walking, but not living. Waiting to be saved. Or maybe wanting to be the one who does the saving.

Review: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by JK Rowling

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter, #4)
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Author: JK Rowling
Series: Harry Potter #4
Version Reviewed: Finished, Hardback
Website: www.jkrowling.com
I received this book as a gift from a family member.

GoodReads Synopsis:
The summer holidays are dragging on and Harry Potter can't wait for the start of the school year. It is his fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and there are spells to be learnt and (unluckily) Potions and Divination lessons to be attended. But Harry can't know that the atmosphere is darkening around him, and his worst enemy is preparing a fate that it seems will be inescapable ...With characteristic wit, fast-paced humour and marvellous emotional depth, J.K. Rowling has proved herself yet again to be a master story-teller.

Review:
My husband and I have been reading the Harry Potter series with our daughter each night before bedtime. With him travelling and being away so much for work and both of us huge lovers of the series, we decided that we would only read the series when we were together, meaning that while he was away, Bella and I would read other books at bedtime. He ended up being transferred to an entirely new job site, so prior to April, we had only since him a couple of weekends since Christmas. So, because of this, it has taken us forever to get this far in the series.

I was super excited when we finally got around to Goblet of Fire. It has always been my favorite book in the series and my favorite movie out of the film versions. This is only my second time reading the book (and the entire series, actually) but there was a time in my teenage years when I watched the movie obsessively. I couldn't wait to get back into my favorite year at Hogwarts.

I love all of the challenges that Harry faces in this book. Not only is he dealing with classes, being a young teen and dealing with everything that comes along with that, but now he has to deal with figuring out how to survive the different tasks of the Triwizard Tournament as well as the impending threat of Lord Voldemort. There's a lot of action and adventure in this one and we get to meet a ton of new and very important characters.

Another reason why I love this book is because it is the turning point for the entire series. On the side of Hogwarts and it's students, our favorite characters are transitioning into their teenage years and they are maturing. They still keep 99% of their original personalities but we get to witness a whole new side of them coming out. From Ron and Hermione and all their bickering to Harry's jealousy of Cedric and Cho, there's a lot of coming of age issues in this book.

Goblet of Fire is also when the series starts to transition into darker, more serious territory. The books have always, from the very first pages, dealt with series issues, but this is the first book that an actual death occurs and the first where Harry truly faces off with Voldemort in all of his glory. From here on out, the books are darker, more serious, and we begin to lose some truly amazing characters.

I'm honestly nervous about rereading the next books in the series because I know how emotionally affected I will be. It's a bittersweet thing when it comes to the last few books in the series. I must admit though that Order of the Phoenix is my least favorite book and I'm so not ready to face off with Umbridge. But, alas, we can't have the good without the bad, can we?

Also, GoF has a ton of great quotes!

Rating: 5 Stars, easily.

“Don’t struggle. You know I’ll keep you safe.” Q’s murmur danced down my back.My panic receded as trust billowed fast and true.Q was born into darkness, but he’d never baptized me in his blackest desires. And because of that, I could implicitly say he spoke the truth. No matter what he did to me, he would never truly harm me.Q paused, his tattooed chest soaking. His feathered sparrows fluffing off droplets almost alive on his skin. “I told you once never to fall for me. That I didn’t want the curse of breaking your heart while I broke so many other pieces of you.” His hands landed on my breasts, cupping them reverently. “Yet you fought me, just like you said you would. You fell for me, just like you promised me you would. And now, you’re willing to give me what I need even after I tricked you and lied.”I swayed as I fell even deeper for this complex husband of mine. Q was all my fantasies in one glorious lifetime. The fact he finally wanted to share me with his child spoke volumes about his capacity to love.“I’m so glad you ignored me, esclave.” His fingertips branded my nipples with pain. “So fucking happy you married me.” Pushing me backward, he smiled harshly as my spine met the pool wall. His chest strained as he sucked in a heavy breath. “You’re so fucking beautiful.”My heart hammered in my ears as he kissed me.His tongue laced with mine, and I sank into the sweet embrace, knowing it would be the last I received tonight. Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex... her books have sex.
